3 Must Haves to Healthier Hair
Curly, straight, braided or silk pressed, in many way Black hair represents the diversity among Black women. Although differ in hair texture, length and needs, the one thing we all have in common is our undeniable desire for healthy, beautiful hair. We go to great lengths to heal and restore our hair back to its healthier state or maintain its health with hot oil and hydration treatments, deep conditioning, protective styling and big chops. We literally do it all! What if we told you that the key to healthy hair is much deeper than a penetrating oil treatment?! As deep as taking care of your hair from the inside out. Let us school you.
We diet, exercise and drink more water at the start of the new year to tackle our fitness goals and get that beach body ready for Spring, but what we eat and drink affects more than just our abs and glutes, it also greatly impacts our hair. We’re not kidding. If you don’t maintain a healthy diet, fitness regimen or drink enough water your hair will suffer the consequences too. These 3 must haves for healthier hair are easy to try and incorporate into your lifestyle:
For More Moisture – Drinking more water will, of course, add more moisture to your hair, but if you’re bored with water try coconut water. Believe it or not coconut water is more hydrating than water. It helps treat dandruff and dry scalp due to its hydrating and anti-fungal properties. But if you’re like us who prefer our coconut in a piña colada, try cucumber infused water or cucumber juice. Fun fact, cucumbers are known to contain 90% water.
To Promote Hair Growth – The best way to get longer locs is to improve blood circulation. Yes, you know what’s coming next…EXERCISE! Incorporating at least 30 minutes of light cardio a day can improve blood circulation which ultimately stimulates your hair from root to tip. This will leave your hair longer and thicker. Trust us.
For More Shine – Probably one of the hardest things to add to your hair is more shine, especially in these cold winter months. But a very pretty-colored and sometimes smelly friend can hook you up. We’re talking about salmon. Fish, like salmon, is packed with something called omega-3 fatty acids, which is one of the most important ingredients for shinier hair.
See! These three must-haves for healthier hair are easy and affordable. I mean number two is practically free. You don’t NEED a gym membership to get your sweat on. So, the next time you heat up your oil for your hot oil treatment, cook up a piece of salmon or grab a bottle of coconut water instead of a mango Fanta, during your late night gas station run. (Yes, they make mango Fanta!) Your abs and your hair will thank you, we promise.
